Biofiltration of methane in presence of ethylbenzene or xylene

Landfill gases (LFGs) are gaseous emissions containing several harmful compounds such as volatile organic (VOCs), inorganic (VICs) along with methane (CH4) which is a powerful greenhouse gas. In the case of small or older landfills, disposal LFG can be economically challenging, and possible solution biofiltration. Biofiltration CH4 in presence two VOCs was studied, ethylbenzene (EB) for biofilter 1 (BF1) xylene (X) 2 (BF2). Both biofilters were packed packing materials operated an empty bed residence time (EBRT) 4.5 min. Methane concentrations varied from 2000 to 10,000 ppmv both i.e., 200 500 ppmv. individual VOC's removal, acclimation period microorganisms EB X close 30 days, indicating similar adaptation EB. The addition under low inlet concentration had minor effect on biodegradation that average VOC removal efficiencies (REs) remained above 85% while CH4-RE around 56% biofilters.
